Lalit Modi is sign of a greater malaise

Lalit Modi is a sign of a greater malaise of our nation and that is the nexus of politicians with affluent buisnessmen, corporates and industrialists. Both sections live for and thrive on power and money. Therefore they complement one another. Politicians need money for their political activities including the greatest show of politics called election. Here the affluent help the politicians. Naturally the obliged politicians help the affluent and facilitate their business, corporate and industrial activities as well as interests and sometimes also help them gain power. There are a few politicians and affluent who are masters at creating politician-affluent nexus and they are valued as well as envied by their peers.

BCCI is a very good example of above described political- affluent nexus. This body itself is one of the most powerful and rich sports bodies of the world. What have politicians like Sharad Pawar,Arun Jaitley, Lalu Prasad Yadav,Rajiv Shukla and industrialists like Jagmohan Dalmiya, A C Muthaiya and N. Srinivasan got to do with cricket ? Only that they have been associated with the BCCI or other cricket bodies of the country and controlled them.Question arises why roles occupied by these politicians and industrialists is not given to giants of cricket world like Bishen Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Deo. They could have served the cause of cricket better.

The answer is obvious. The politicians and industrialists would prefer to keep and control the rich and powerful cricket body themselves and complement one another in this job.

Lalit Modi represented not only the affluent corporate world at BCCI, he was a master manipulator, adept at creating nexus with the politicians as well as nouveaue riche and present day nobility of India. His background also helped him in this. That is why his lawyer proclaimed him to be belonging to the family of Great Sir Raibahadur Modi at his press conference.

With the IPL jamboree, Lalit Modi converted cricket into a show biz with sexy cheerleaders and late night parties with inbuilt thrill of 20-20 cricket and he was hailed as a great sportsmind, a showman with great business acumen untill he fell foul with the powers that be of his time.

Thereafter he became a fugitive albeit with the help of his politician friends.Despite of all the charges against him he has been sitting pretty at England. No-one made any effort for his extradition nor interpole was asked to pursue him. Suddenly the political class discovers now that the man has been pulling wool over their eyes. The question arises if really this discovery is so sudden or questions have been raised now only when it has been found that it could be politically profitable. It puts a question mark over the honesty of intentions. Leaving aside the minor political players, political class as a whole has hobnobbed with the the persons like Lalit Modi

However question of impropriety can not be suppressed. And here B J P is failing to prove that it is different from Congress. Preference was given to old ties over the public institutional responsibility and propriety. Even if it is a case of overlook, it raises question over the use of discretion by persons who are at the helm of affairs. While BJP needs to think over how to control the damage, political class as a whole should think over how to get the Indian system free of the malaise of obligation and counter obligation as well as nexus of the politician with the facilitator.
